These changes are physiological rather than motivational, which is why maintenance requires managing a genuinely altered appetite rather than merely repeating earlier discipline.

Energy expenditure falls further than expected

A smaller body requires less energy simply because there is less of it, which is arithmetic. What complicates matters is that expenditure falls by more than size alone predicts.

Muscle becomes more efficient, spontaneous movement decreases, and the total drops below what would be calculated for a person of the same weight who never dieted.

That gap can persist for a long period after loss, meaning maintenance requires eating less than someone naturally at the same weight.

The defence is asymmetric

The same regulatory system responds far more weakly to weight gain, so upward drift is not resisted with comparable force.

This asymmetry means a defended range can move upward over time and then be defended at the new level, which is one explanation for gradual gain across adulthood.

It also means the metaphor of a fixed set point is imprecise. The range shifts, and it shifts more readily in one direction.
