Life expectancy at birth is among the most quoted health statistics and among the most misread. It describes current conditions rather than predicting individual futures.

What the figure is built from

Statisticians take the death rates observed at every age during a single period and apply them to an imaginary group of newborns.

That group is carried through life on paper, losing members at each age according to the observed rate, and the average age at death of the group is the reported figure.

Nothing about the future enters the calculation. It is a summary of one period's mortality, expressed in years because that unit is more intuitive than a table of rates.

Why it is not a prediction

An actual newborn will live through decades of changing medicine, behavior and hazard, none of which the period calculation attempts to anticipate.

Demographers do construct cohort life expectancy, which incorporates projected changes, but it requires assumptions about the future and is reported less often.

The period figure is preferred for comparison precisely because it is assumption-free, making it a clean measure of conditions in a given year and place.

How infant mortality distorts intuition

Deaths in the first year of life pull the average down sharply, because each one removes a full lifetime from the calculation.

This is why historical life expectancies of around thirty do not imply that adults were elderly at forty. Those who survived childhood often lived considerably longer.

Life expectancy at older ages is reported separately for this reason, and remaining years at sixty-five is often the more informative figure for retirement planning contexts.

What averaging conceals

A single national number averages across groups with substantially different mortality, and those differences can be larger than the gaps between countries.

Differences by geography, income and education within the United States are well documented, and a national figure moves only with the aggregate.

Disaggregated estimates therefore carry information the headline number removes, which is why public health analysis rarely stops at the national figure.

Why the measure still dominates

Life expectancy compresses an entire mortality schedule into one number that can be compared across places and years without specialist interpretation.

It is also sensitive, moving detectably when mortality shifts at any age, which makes it useful for detecting change even when its meaning is misconstrued.

Read correctly, it answers a narrow question: what a period's death rates would imply if they never changed. Everything else attributed to it is inference.
